What is a counseling session like?

In the first session, you will meet your counselor. You will learn more about your counselor and the counseling relationship. You will review your current concerns and discuss your personal history. You will also review important paperwork and policies.

Over the next couple of sessions, you will work with your counselor to solidify your goals for therapy and the path that will help you get there. This could include using evidenced-based approaches like CBT, DBT, EMDR, or neurofeedback. Once a plan is established, the real work begins.

How long is a session?

Sessions last 50 minutes for individual therapy. Sessions typically last 80 minutes for couples counseling or EMDR reprocessing.

How often will I meet with my counselor?

As a client, you will work with your counselor to determine how often to schedule your sessions. The frequency of your counseling appointments will be based upon your goals, presenting concerns, and treatment modalities used. Many clients start with weekly sessions.

Once a schedule is agreed upon, attending appointments and arriving on time will be important for you to reach your goals.

How long will I need to come to therapy?

Your personal needs and goals will determine the length of the counseling relationship. It is your counselor’s goal to ensure therapy is effective and efficient.

Can I do therapy online?

YES! Seneca Therapy offers online “teletherapy” to Texas residents. Teletherapy offered HIPAA compliant, so your information and the session are completely secure.

I don’t think I have a mental illness. Can counseling benefit me?

You do not have to have a previous or current diagnosis to attend therapy. Counseling is a safe place for you to navigate concerns such as stress, low energy, poor sleep, low self-esteem, worrying, anger management, life changes (marriage, divorce, retirement, moving, career), or relationship or parenting issues. Counseling can help you learn coping skills and communication tools.

Is counseling confidential?

Yes. Our sessions are confidential, meaning your information will not be shared without your express, written permission. Your personal information is protected by HIPAA. Limitations to confidentiality will be discussed during intake and ongoing appointments.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. Only a doctor can prescribe psychotropic medication (anti-depressants, anxiolytics, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers). I am able to provide you a list of referrals for local psychiatrists in your part of Texas.
